Smooth Stone Guitars was started after a friend offered to purchase a guitar for me. My old Guild would not stay in tune during Sunday worship services. My wife suggested that I just build a guitar to my own specs. With a background in engineering, it just seemed logical I should try. Little did my wife and I realize the number of specialized tools and equipment I would need! By the time everything was said and done the only thing to do was keep building guitars! So, after a hundred or so guitars, here we are, and still building. It has become a labor of love. Each instrument has its own personality and beauty. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Smooth Stone guitars started in a dairy barn in Pocatello, Idaho. Today I am in Georgia, my home state. From a business point of view it has been the best thing possible. Georgia’s music scene is vibrant. Every country boy wants to play guitar, and every mother wants their child to be a star. Our designs have grown from just a couple of body sizes to six acoustics and two electrics to meet the needs of a larger customer base. I have built a large number of custom acoustic and electric instruments. All of our instruments can be customized to suit every player's needs and desires.

Traditional guitar building has not changed in the last 75-100 years—but at Smooth Stone Guitars, we are experimenting with a few new concepts. For example, on the slope shoulder we have developed a new bracing structure on the top of the guitar that opens the vibrating area of the lower bout, increasing the volume, tone and sustain of the guitar. I am experimenting with supporting components on the inside of the instrument, hoping this will help with the amount of tone wood used and increasing the sustainability of critical tone woods. The future of acoustic instruments is the wood used. We are doing our part by looking at domestic wood, non-critical tonal parts, and other areas to help keep the exotics on the grid for years to come.
